About

The MAKNA Cancer Research Award was initiated in the year 2001 to promote cancer research among young scientists in advancing knowledge that is geared towards helping cancer patients and discovering potential cures for the disease. Since its introduction, MAKNA has awarded a total of RM 2,092,166 towards funding cancer research by young researchers in Malaysia. To-date, the programme has funded 69 researchers in all. Focusing on research is in line with the MAKNA mission, which is to mobilise all resources to provide curative, preventive, research and support services to cancer patients and families, high-risk groups and the general public.


Criteria for MAKNA Cancer Research Award

MAKNA offers 3 research awards per year with the value of each award not exceeding RM 50,000. The award CANNOT be used for travel or field work, purchase equipment, employ salaried personnel or related expenses including token of appreciation and honorarium, to attend conferences or to pay for publication fees. The project must be carried out in Malaysia and completed within 2 years.

Call for Application

The deadline for 2024 MAKNA Cancer Research Award (MCRA) application submission is from 03/02/2024 to 14/04/2024, Sunday, 11.59pm Incomplete applications or applications submitted after the closing date shall not be considered.


Eligibility

Application is open to all Malaysian citizens with a basic degree below 40 years of age, residing in Malaysia and interested in cancer research. Students who are pursuing their postgraduate degrees are encouraged to apply.


Review of Application

All applications received will be reviewed by an appointed Selection Panel. The evaluation result by the Selection Panel is final. Candidates will be evaluated on:-

  • Originality

  • Doability

  • Relevance to cancer/Malaysia

  • Potential outcome

  • Financial feasibility

  • Track record of the investigator


Award Disbursement

Grant Award Letter, which contains all the terms and conditions of the award, will be issued to all selected recipients. The recipients and their respective institutions must formally accept the award and agree to the terms and conditions of the award following which the award will be disbursed through the candidate's institution.


Award Report

Recipient must submit a progress report in the 12th month of project implementation and a final report upon completion of project (within 3 months). Should the recipient fail to submit the report within the specified submission period, the recipient’s institution will be notified, and the institution will be responsible to ensure compliance by the recipient.


Application Requirements & Procedure

  • All applications must be submitted online through the ASM Awards and Recognition system at www.mytopscientists.org before the closing date.

  • The latest format of research proposal may be downloaded from the ASM Awards and Recognition system. Application with the wrong or outdated research proposal will not be accepted;

  • Any resubmission from previous application should be revised and updated.

  • All required information should be stated clearly and concisely.

  • The complete application documents comprised of the followings:

    • Completed Application Form (Comprised of Section A: Impact of Research Output, Section B: Knowledge Generation, Section C: Knowledge Dissemination, Section D: Research Project Proposal (MAKNA) and Declaration.)

    • Completed MAKNA Research Proposal together with the Turnitin or plagiarism report in a single PDF file format.

    • Updated institutional endorsement form signed by the Dean / Head of the unit in which the candidate will realise the reseach work (dated no later than six months from the date of application).
