About TRSM

The Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) is an ASM initiative in line with its focus on fostering a culture of excellence in Science, Technology, Innovation and Economy (STIE). The initiative aims to identify and recognise the local leading research scientists in Malaysia. The output of this initiative is to establish and showcase the Top Research Scientists Malaysia profile that would act as a central point of reference on the leading Malaysian research scientists and their research background. The convention of the best minds in the country would create a hub for knowledge dissemination that can spur the growth of STIE in Malaysia.

Objectives

  • To develop a pool of leading Malaysian research scientists.

  • To recognise and showcase leading Malaysian research scientists as drivers to the National STIE agenda.

  • To identify leading Malaysian research scientists with pioneer mindsets to move Malaysia toward becoming an innovation-led economy.

  • To build a critical mass of globally leading Malaysian research scientists.


Eligibility

  • Research scientists with Malaysian citizenship working in Malaysia whose outstanding achievements in STIE and have been nationally and internationally recognised.

  • At the time of application, the candidate should be actively involved in research (research activities in the last 5 years should be reflected in the CV) with at least 10 years cumulative contribution towards the progress of STIE.

  • The candidate should be of high ethical standing (without any criminal or bankruptcy record).

  • ASM Fellows are eligible to apply for the Top Research Scientists Malaysia recognition.


Selection Criteria

The Top Research Scientists Malaysia (TRSM) will be selected through an objective and standardised scoring mechanism based on the following criteria:-

Section A: Impact of Research Output
  1. Cumulative citations received and Hirsch-index in either Thomson Reuters WOS or Scopus database.

  2. Commercialisation Attained:
    1. Technologies commercialised with sales and/or royalties.
    2. Spin-off / joint venture companies resulting from commercialisation of IPR.
    3. Cumulative gross sales and/or royalties from commercialisation of R&D products (RM).

  3. Academic Awards from Government, Professional and Learned Bodies:
    1. International.
    2. National.

  4. Recognition and/or Professional Leadership (including appointment as a Chair, Visiting Professorship, Reviewer of grant proposals from international funding bodies & papers for international journals, Editors of Books / Journals / Citation-Indexed Conference Proceedings / Technical Guidelines):
    1. Number of recognitions and membership in international bodies or professional associations.
    2. Number of recognitions and membership in national bodies or professional associations.

  5. Lead Consultant in Projects with Monetary Rewards:
    1. Number of consultancy projects:
      • International.
      • National.

    2. Cumulative value of consultancy projects (RM).

  6. Impact of Research toward Novel Knowledge, Wealth Creation and/or Societal Wellbeing. This section requires a description of not more than 250 words, on the impact of your research that reflects excellence, relevance and innovative leadership resulting in economic benefits or enhancement of health or education or quality of life. This summary should reflect how the scientist’s contribution has translated into wealth creation and societal well-being. This will be considered an important part of the evaluation.


Section B: Knowledge Generation
  1. Leadership in research:
    1. Total number of research projects as Principle Investigator (PI):
      • International.
      • National.

    2. Cumulative value of grants received as PI (RM):
      • International.
      • National.

Section C: Knowledge Dissemination
  1. Publications:
    1. Publications in indexed journals, book(s), chapters in book(s), monograph(s) and/or article(s) in professional or scientific magazine(s) as corresponding author.
    2. Publications in indexed journal as non-corresponding author.

  2. Intellectual Property Rights (IPR):
    1. International:
      • Patent granted.
      • Patent pending.

    2. National:
      • Patent granted.
      • Patent pending.

    3. Industrial design(s) / Copyright(s) / Trademark(s).

  3. Scientific Presentations:
    1. International:
      • Keynote speaker.
      • Plenary speaker.

    2. National:
      • Keynote speaker.
      • Plenary speaker.

    3. Number of appearances as Guest speaker and/or Panellist in mass media in the area of expertise.

  • Talent Development
    1. Graduated PhD students (only main supervision will be considered for Institute of Higher Learnings staff).
    2. Graduated Master students (only main supervision will be considered for Institute of Higher Learnings staff).
    3. Graduated Research Trainees and/or Research Officer supervised.

    Upon successful submission, the shortlisted TRSM applicants will be acknowledged with a reply email and call for an interview session. It is compulsory for the shortlisted applicants to attend the interview session and for those who failed to attend, they will not be considered for the next evaluation level.


    Scoring Mechanism

    ASM Discipline Groups except Social Sciences & Humanities and Industrial Research group:

    • Section A: Impact of Research Output - 40%
    • Section B: Knowledge Generation - 30%
    • Section C: Knowledge Dissemination - 30%
    Social Sciences & Humanities and Industrial Research Group:

    • Section A: Impact of Research Output - 60%
    • Section B: Knowledge Generation - 20%
    • Section C: Knowledge Dissemination - 20%
    The grading mechanism for the Interview Session will be ranked as PASS or FAIL by the TRSM Selection Panel.
